Hybrid power plant with solar energy storage

What is a solar power plant with storage?

As a leader in the development of innovative photovoltaic solutions, we offer hybrid solar power plants that incorporate battery storage systems. Working closely with the Axpo Group’s battery division, we design state-of-the-art projects that combine renewable energy production with smart storage management.

The entire value chain is managed by a single group: design, construction, and operation by Urbasolar, and energy management by Axpo Flexpool.

How does a hybrid solar power plant with a battery work?

A hybrid solar power plant combines the power of solar energy with the efficiency of battery storage. This innovative system optimizes electricity production and distribution, ensuring a stable and continuous power supply.

The solar power plant and the battery system are connected to the same grid connection point, forming an integrated unit. The batteries are typically installed in shipping containers.

At the heart of this hybrid power plant, a controller manages real-time control of the entire system. This crucial component ensures optimal utilization of both components—photovoltaics and storage—based on the strategy defined by the customer.

Management strategies may include various options, such as optimizing photovoltaic curtailment, arbitrage on the spot electricity market, or providing services to the power grid in accordance with tenders issued by grid operators.

Main components:

  • Photovoltaic solar panels
  • One or more hybrid inverters
  • Transformers
  • Storage batteries (in partnership with Axpo Batterie)
  • Energy management system

Our collaboration with Axpo Batterie ensures the integration of state-of-the-art storage technologies, thereby optimizing the performance and sustainability of our hybrid power plants.

The integration of batteries, as an electrochemical technology, requires special attention to ensure safety during operation. Urbasolar benefits from valuable experience gained during the construction of power plants in demanding environments, particularly in overseas territories. This expertise is a major asset in the development of new projects.

What are the benefits of the hybrid solution?

Hybrid photovoltaic power plants offer numerous benefits, addressing current and future energy challenges:

  • Production stability: smoothing out fluctuations in solar power generation
  • Energy self-sufficiency: reducing dependence on the power grid
  • Optimization of self-consumption: maximizing the use of generated energy
  • Reduced energy costs: substantial long-term savings
  • Grid flexibility: contributing to balancing electricity demand
  • Reduced environmental impact: producing clean and sustainable energy
  • Adaptation to customer needs based on the type of operation
  • Diversification of revenue streams: the battery enables energy to be monetized through multiple mechanisms
  • Optimization of photovoltaic production by reducing curtailment during peak production periods, with monetization during off-peak production periods
